Indian Dance As a child I studied classical Indian dance for one year. The ballet teacher in our town knew a young woman in New York City who had been captivated by Indian dance and had given up her career with Joffery Ballet to travel to India and persue a career in classical Indian dance. Once a week she would travel upstate to our little school and give us a lesson. By the end of the year she had us present a recital in one of the community centers. I was very taken by the dance form and upon arriving in NYC as a teen began looking for a teacher to study with. It was not till 4 years ago, however, that I found the Indian dance teacher of my dreams -- Anil Kumar Rambadri. He teaches a form of Indian classical dance that is so beautiful; called Kuchipudi. It has all the exquisite hand movements so distinctive of Indian dance, plus alot of rhythmic foot beats, but all done in a very soft and lilting manner, unlike the more regimental forms of Kathak and Bharta Natyam. Also, he is an expert in different folkloric and tribal Indian dances, as well as an innovator and prolific choreographer of Indian dance in general. Give him any song and he will create such a beautiful dance with total musicality and imaginative movement motifs. Plus he knows all of the cultural aspects of the different songs and the regions they are from. He has a very systematic method of teaching. Everything in the dance is based on fundamental exercises that need to be memorized and performed by rote. Once these are mastered the student has a strong foundation upon which all choreography will be based-- I find it truly masterful the way everything then flows together so harmoniously and skillfully; like total perfection.-- ( Click here for ANIL KUMAR'S RESUME & CONTACT INFORMATION) After 4 years I have learned all the basics of Kuchipudi style plus a certain level of Kathak style. Also, I have learned numerous folk and tribal dances. Altogether I have some 40 dances that I can perform at different Indian functions. I have performed at many Indian Halls and restaurants in the tri-state area. These include the Royal Albert Palace, The Moghul Room, Shaan Restaurant, The Jewel of India, Akbar Restaurant, Bombay Palace, etc..
